Searching

For researching hate groups, ideology, crimes, victims, and perpetrators, you may find useful articles in the criminology, sociology, psychology, and communications literature (See Articles tab). You can find books (fiction, non-fiction, and graphic novels), plus videos and articles, in LibrarySearch (see Books & E-books, Films/Documentaries). See the News and Data & Statistics tabs for databases and websites with news, data, and statistics.

Search LibrarySearch and databases by keywords. Combine keywords with AND and use OR for synonyms or related terms. Use names of hate groups, ideology, victims, and perpetrators.

For instance:

(LGBTQ OR gay OR lesbian OR trans) AND "hate crime"

hate crime AND (juvenile OR adolescent OR youth)

A few tips:

  • Use " " if you are searching for a phrase, e.g. "hate speech" or "United States"
  • Use broader or alternate terms, e.g. gender for women; "law enforcement" for police
  • Put each concept on a different line/search box in the databases (or use parentheses.)
  • Look at "subjects" of articles and books for more keywords to use
  • Try multiple searches, revising and using different keywords
  • Use filters to narrow your results
