Art Activism and Solidarity

Artists Call
In the early 1980s, a group of artists, writers and activists came together in New York City to form Artists Call Against US Intervention in Central America, a creative campaign that mobilized nationwide in an effort to bring attention to the US government's violent involvement in Latin American nations such as Nicaragua and El Salvador. Together the group staged over 200 exhibitions, concerts and other public events in a single year, raising awareness and funds for those disenfranchised by such political crises.

Institute of Arts and Letters of El Salvador in Exile (INALSE)
Established in 1983 by Daniel Flores y Ascencio, INALSE organized an exhibition at the United Nations in support of peace in Central America. It seems that it is from this gathering that the more broadly-based activist campaign Artists Call Against U.S. Intervention in Central America emerged.

El Taller Latino Americano
In 1979 El Taller Latino American was founded in 1979 to bridge the gap between Latin Americans and North Americans through art, dance, aned music.

Sanctuary Movement
The sanctuary movement emerged in 1980 in opposition to the U.S. government's foreign policy in Central America and remained active until the early 1990s when U.S. policy began to shift from Cold War to post–Cold War strategies.
